Our school is operated by the City of Edinburgh Council and is a public (state) school for children aged 3 to 12. Children living in our catchment area can come to our school. If there are no places available, catchment children can join our waiting list. Non-catchment area children can apply for places.
Over 50 community languages are spoken and we respect and celebrate all languages and cultures. We are an inclusive school with very low levels of reported prejudice and bullying.
Our school comprises
- nursery building
- main building which accommodates P1 – P6
- annexe building 2 which accommodates music classes and Primary 7
Our school celebrated its bi-centenary in 2003 and we are very proud of our long tradition of providing high quality education in the Marchmont neighbourhood of Edinburgh.
James Gillespie’s Primary is staffed by a Head Teacher, 3 Depute Head Teachers, one full time Support for Learning Teacher, Health & Well-being/Physical Education teacher, Music teacher, class teachers, pupil support assistants and early years practitioners.
We also have a part time business manager, a full time administrator and a part time clerical assistant. The City of Edinburgh Council provides a facilities technician (janitor).
We work with NHS, social work, educational psychology and other partner services to support our children and families.
We provide the Scottish Curriculum. Most of our children transition to James Gillespie’s High School which shares our campus.
